Driving from Thessaloniki
to Athens, on the one hundred kilometre next to the national road and opposite
the castle of Platamon is a small village Neos Panteleimonas. Neos Panteleimonas
is a beautiful place in Pieria - Macedonia (see
the map).
There are a lot of exciting places in the area. The Byzantine castle of Platamon,
the traditional village of old Panteleimonas etc.. (Neos Panteleimonas and
Platamonas were one village before, the Old
Panteleimonas,today).
The Byzantine castle of Platamon is one of the finest and best preserved castles in Greece which is situated on the southeast foot of mountain Olympus on a hill overlooking the sea, a position that has commanded the shortest route between Macedonia and Thessaly since ancient times. It was built in 1204 A.C. Inside the castle there are two churches from the Middle Byzantine period and Early Christian period. The tower of the castle is very high and the architecture of the walls is excellent. From the tower the view is perfect. You can see the mountain of Gods Olympus, the sea (Thermaikos gulf) and if the weather is clear you can see Halkidiki.
The old Panteleimonas village is three kilometres far away from the castle. It's in a very good position ,about five hundred metres above the sea. In this site you will be amazed from the traditional Greek style and buildings architecture . It's a place that everyone can relax.In the square of the village there is a big plan-tree, the church of Saint Panteleimonas and a fountain with cold natural water from mountain of Olympus. Also there are restaurants that you can taste special and excellent food and have your coffee watching the panoramic view.
